Care navigation is no longer just a “nice to have.” It has become an essential part of how employers support their people, control costs, and stay competitive. Every day, my Care Navigation Team and I see how confusing and costly the process becomes without support, something we outlined in our recent blog  The Reality of Unguided Care Navigation. Without guidance, that confusion often leads to avoidance, unnecessary spending, and added stress.

Care navigation fills that gap. It gives employees a trusted guide and gives employers measurable value through cost savings and stronger retention.

The Growing Trend of Care Navigation

Across the benefits world, more employers are asking about care navigation. It’s also becoming a common topic in RFPs and renewal conversations. In fact, 83% of employers now cite care navigation as the key to improving quality within value-based care models.

Employers are looking for ways to:

  • Help employees use their benefits with confidence
  • Reduce wasteful or duplicative care
  • Support a better everyday experience for their teams

Care navigation meets all three of these needs. Instead of leaving members alone with a provider directory and a login, care navigation gives them a real person to talk to, and a clear path forward.

What the Data Tells Us

The promise of care navigation is not just about feeling fully supported, although that is important. It is also about real, measurable impact. At HealthEZ, we have seen that care navigation can deliver an estimated 11% reduction in employer healthcare costs. That reduction comes from helping members:

  • Get to the right level of care sooner
  • Avoid unnecessary specialty visits
  • Understand what is covered before they make a decision
  • Stay on track with follow up care

When people have guidance, they make better choices. Better choices lead to better outcomes and smarter spending.

The Human Side: Quality of Life and Retention

Numbers matter, but behind every metric is a real person trying to manage their health and their life. Care navigation makes that experience easier. When employees know they can turn to a Navigator, they feel less stressed, more confident using their benefits, and more supported by their employer.

That support builds trust. People remember who helped them in confusing moments, and employers who offer this guidance create loyalty, which is a powerful retention tool in today’s competitive talent market.

The Referral Spiral

One of the easiest places to see the value of care navigation is in how referrals are managed. A member may start with one concern, then get sent to a specialist, then for tests, then to another specialist. Each step adding appointments, costs, and confusion. Without guidance, they often feel obligated to say yes to everything.

Care navigation changes that. A navigator helps the member understand which referrals are truly needed, find in-network providers, ask informed questions, and avoid unnecessary tests or consults. It’s a simple example of how navigation brings clarity, reduces costs, and improves the entire member experience.

Building a Smarter Path Forward

Care navigation blends data and empathy, pairing measurable savings and stronger retention with the clarity, reassurance, and better quality of life that employees need.

For brokers, it creates an opportunity to offer employers a solution that supports both their budgets and their people. At HealthEZ, we believe no one should have to navigate healthcare alone, and care navigation is how we bring that belief to life.

When employees have a guide, they use their benefits more wisely, employers save, and people thrive. Everyone moves forward together.
